10 Tips for Travelling by Railway

Railway travel is an affordable adventure in many countries. But if you have never ridden on a railway, it can be a challenge too. We compiled a list of 10 tips for travelling by railway to make your adventure more enjoyable.

1. Take Along Snacks. Some trains will run with dining cars, others will allow vendors to board for a few minutes during stops to sell snacks. Regardless, the selection is limited so don’t expect healthy choices. The best thing to do is bring along healthy snacks for the trip.

2. Bring Your Own Toiletries. Carry wet wipes and toilet paper in your bag. Some trains may not offer these luxuries at all, so be prepared.

3. Pay Extra for a Sleeper Car. If your train trip is longer than 12 hours, it may be worth it to get a sleeper car, so you can arrive at your destination refreshed. Just remember to pack a sweatshirt or blanket as many trains will be cold.

4. Pack Light. When travelling by train you will need to keep your luggage with you at all times. Packing light will make it easier to move around with your bags. Use locks on your bags and a lockable strap system to lock your bags to your chair or bed. But never leave valuables in your bag unattended.

5. Use a Money Belt. Buy and use a money belt to keep your passports, visa, credit cards, and cash close to you. Do not leave these things in your bags. Make sure everything is easily accessible to you, but not to pickpockets.

6. Know Your Surroundings. Listen for announcements and track changes. If a large group of people suddenly move off your platform, ask why. Never cross the train tracks to get to another platform. And always stay away from the platform edge.

7. Confirm Your Location. Once you board the train, confirm with the conductor you are in the right train car. Some cars will disconnect at various locations so make sure you are in the right car.

8. Drink Bottled Water. Tap water is not potable on trains, so only drink bottled water. Do not accept food or drink from strangers.

9. Know Your Train’s Policies. Some trains allow alcohol, others do not. Follow the rules of the train. If in doubt, ask the conductor.

10. Charge Your Electronics Before Boarding.
Most trains will not offer charging ports, so if you bring electronics charge them before boarding. Better yet, unplug for the trip and enjoy the scenery and conversation with your fellow travellers.
