Other than the European cliché of historic monuments, classic old towns combined with modern architecture, lively night life and traditional cuisines, what Sofia offers which many of them don’t, are the untouched Natural wonders encircling this city. Magnificent peaks, thick forests, alpine sites, fresh air, huge mountain tracks, of Vitosha National Park so close to the city has made hiking hobby of the people of Sofia.
According to some researches, hiking is considered to be a healthy activity that allows you to clear your head and enables your body to resist heart diseases. Moreover, it lets you connect with the nature in a very unique way where destination is not centered at some specific spot, but throughout the jaunt. It is perfectly defined by John Muir:
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”
Vitosha Mountain is a dome shaped mountain overlooking Sofia and the most visited mountain spot of this city. Some might call it the landmark of Sofia. It is famous for its unique formation of granite rocks in a shape of river called moraines, and for its curative mineral springs. The exclusive claim of this site is that it is equally enjoyable in any season. It is said to be the busiest and most crowded during summers and in winters it becomes a famous site for skiing and other snow sports. However, the best season to visit Vitosha Mountain is autumn, when it is less crowded and more enjoyable. Pathways turn golden with falling leaves and trees red and yellow, the whole atmosphere seems to shed colors, which is only perceptible in autumn.
