Altitude sickness can strike anytime you move to a higher elevation too quickly.  The number one way to combat altitude sickness is to allow your body to adjust gradually to higher elevations. If you don’t, you risk suffering from one of the three types of altitude sickness listed below.

Acute Mountain Sickness is common and feels like a mild hangover.  
High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) is life-threatening build-up of fluid in the lungs.  
High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) is also life-threatening due to build-up of fluid on the brain. 

To avoid complications, know the signs and symptoms of altitude sickness which includes headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, loss of energy, shortness of breath, problems with sleep, lack of appetite. These symptoms come on within 12-24 hours of reaching a higher elevation. Mild symptoms will reduce after a few days as your body adjusts to the new altitude.  

If symptoms get worse or you experience confusion, inability to walk, a tightening in your chest, and lack of coordination, then you should seek immediate care and return to a lower elevation. For severe cases, return to below 4,000 feet. 

The best way to combat Altitude Sickness is to prevent it by climbing to higher altitudes gradually. Allow your body to adjust to the new heights with less oxygen. 

Start below 10,000 feet. 

For every 3,000 feet you climb, rest one whole day at that elevation.
After reaching 10,000 feet, only claimed 1,000 feet more per day. 

If you climb over 1,000 feet in a day, return to the 1,000 feet mark to sleep. 

Stay hydrated by drinking a least of 3-4 quarts of water each day.
Eat 70% of your calories in cabs. 

Use no prescriptions or drugs during your climb.
Know the signs of Altitude sickness and react if someone exhibits these signs.
