Tips on travelling with kids: DOs and DON’Ts

Travelling with kids is a tricky job. You have to cater for their needs and make sure they are enjoying a safe environment in a way that doesn’t spoil their experience because once their mood is upset your whole trip can tumbledown. Kids thrive on adventure, they take travelling so seriously, they would want everything that can make it the best experience of their life and if they are happy your journey is guaranteed to be a pleasant one. Following are some tips to make it possible:

What to do:

1-      Let the kids prepare their knapsack themselves. This is a way they express their excitement, they would want to take the best clothes from their wardrobe with some cute night wear, some snacks along with their favorite toy. Try not to impose your choices on them because it can spoil their excitement.

2-      Kids are very venturous by nature. Try asking for their help in planning the excursion, explore maps with them show them different snaps and videos of the travel destination; this will help facilitate an enjoyable and smooth experience for both yourself and your kids.

3-      Be sure to take proper precautionary measures before you leave. Secure them with proper vaccination, try keeping some general health supplements and insect repellents. Children are prone to dehydration as well, so keeping a water bottle is essential.

4-      Children are known to have a curious nature. Try to maintain their interest by communicating with them, sharing your thoughts from time to time, answering all their questions etc. This will help build their familiarity with the place and they will feel more comfortable and secure.

5-      Encourage them to keep a travel journal, take photographs and collect souvenirs because a certain type of travel mania is going to occupy your house for few days after the trip is over. Kids love to talk about their adventures again and again, and share the experience with their friends by showing them pictures and post cards. The new souvenirs will replace the old toys in their shelves for few days.

What not to do:

1-      Travelling with kids is like travelling for kids, you can’t choose an old town or historic monument and expect them to enjoy it with you; it would most likely spoil your experience as well. Choose places which kids are most attracted to, such as a zoo or an amusement park, aquariums, magic shows etc. Museums can be knowledgeable for them while Beaches can be recreational. Some beaches offer water sports for kids during summer months.

2-      Do not leave all the hassle of booking and planning for when you reach your destination, all that running can’t be done with the kids. From ticketing to transportation and lodging everything should be pre-booked.

3-       Try not to go for a hotel for lodging because most of them don’t offer kids’ friendly meal, especially breakfast; they mostly just like cereal or a croissant as a morning meal. Try booking a kids’ friendly apartments so they can enjoy their own space and feel at home.
